Spotting the Signs of Head & Neck Cancer: When to See a Specialist

It’s easy to dismiss a nagging sore throat or a cough that just won’t quit. But when a minor annoyance becomes a persistent problem, it might be your body sending a signal. Knowing how to interpret these signs is a vital part of managing your health.

While most of these symptoms are harmless, it’s important to have clear, reliable information about which ones warrant a closer look. Understanding the difference empowers you to take the right steps toward getting answers.

The Importance of Persistence

Head and neck cancer is a term for cancers that develop in the mouth, throat, voice box, or sinuses. For these conditions, the key to successful treatment is almost always early detection. Catching a problem in its beginning stages leads to better outcomes and more treatment options.

This is why the single most important word to remember is persistence. A symptom caused by a common infection will usually improve. But one that lingers for weeks with no sign of getting better requires a professional evaluation.

Key Signs That Warrant a Specialist’s Attention

The National Cancer Institute identifies several key warning signs of head and neck cancer. If you experience any of the following symptoms for more than two to three weeks, you should schedule a visit with an ENT specialist.

  1. A Lump or Mass in the Neck. One of the most common signs is a new lump in the neck that doesn’t go away. While lymph nodes often swell when you’re sick, a mass that lasts, is painless, or is growing needs to be examined by a specialist.
  1. A Sore Throat That Won’t Go Away. A typical sore throat from a virus usually gets better within a week. If you have a sore throat that lasts for several weeks without an obvious cause, it’s a clear signal to see a doctor.
  1. Changes in Your Voice or Hoarseness. Losing your voice after a loud event is normal. But if you find yourself sounding raspy or hoarse for weeks on end, it could signal an issue with your voice box, or larynx.
  1. Difficulty or Pain When Swallowing. Pain when swallowing or a feeling that food is getting stuck in your throat is a symptom that should not be ignored. Persistent trouble with swallowing requires a thorough investigation.
  1. A Sore or Patch in the Mouth. Check your mouth for any red or white patches on your gums, tongue, or lining of your mouth. A sore that doesn’t heal or any unusual bleeding should be evaluated.
