Why Do I Have a Persistent Sore Throat?

Sore throats commonly result from many types of illnesses. Throat itchiness, pain, burning, and hoarseness are the different symptoms that you may experience if you have a sore throat.

There are two different categories of persistent sore throat. These are:

  • Recurring sore throat
  • Chronic sore throat (long-term)

Certain types of illnesses that can cause a persistent sore throat are self-resolving. However, your sore throat may be linked to severe infection. With this in mind, it’s important to have your condition diagnosed by a skilled healthcare professional

Causes of Persistent Sore Throat

Although a persistent sore throat can occur from several factors, the most common causes are:

1. Postnasal drip

Postnasal drip is the result of excessive mucus draining down the back of your throat from your sinuses.

2. Allergies

Airborne allergens such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and certain foods can cause allergy symptoms. These allergies can present as a sore throat, along with a runny nose, sneezing, and itchy or watery eyes.

3. Acid reflux

Acid reflux, commonly known as heartburn, occurs when gastric contents regurgitate into the esophagus. Recurrent episodes of acid reflux can result in a sore throat.

4. Tonsillitis

Persistent sore throat in children is commonly caused by tonsillitis. However, it can also be diagnosed in adults. Tonsillitis is generally managed with an antibiotic prescription from a healthcare professional.

5. Infectious mononucleosis

Mono is the result of an infection with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). Its symptoms are similar to the flu and are often self-resolving.

6. Mouth breathing

Throat dryness can result from mouth breathing during sleeping. This presents as a sore throat that is assuaged by drinking water in the morning.
